David's Story
After graduation in '72, my folks moved to Stone Mountain in April of '73. My dad had lung cancer during that time and was quite ill. He had a lung removed and I went to work with him in his business while he recovered. I waited two years to start college in ¿74 and then went to CBC/CIU in Columbia, SC. I joined a small music group representing the college and traveled on weekends and some summers playing drums, my euphonium and singing. I finished CIU in '78. I returned to Atlanta and worked for UPS for two years to save money for grad school. I went to TEDS in Deerfield, Il for seminary in '80 (where I worked again for UPS) and returned to Atlanta a year later in '81 where I went on staff at my home church. There, I met my wife Laura who had moved to Atlanta for grad school at Emory. We were married in ¿83 and went back to school in ¿85 at ATS in Nyack, NY. Once again, I worked for UPS for a year and a half while we both went to school. I finished a masters at ATS. Laura and I went to Toronto Institute of Linguistics in Toronto in the summer of ¿86 and then on to France for a year. Our oldest son, Andrew, was born in France in '87. We then went to Guinea, West Africa in the fall of '87. Our second son was born in Ferkessedougou, RCI in '89. We were in the US in March of '9...Expand for more
2 for the birth of our third son. So we ended up with a European (Frenchman), an African (Ivorian), and an American (Georgia boy)! We returned from Guinea to the US in the summer of '95 and then went out to Cote d¿Ivoire (RCI) in '97 where we worked in a town/village until 2001. We returned to RCI in '02 but were caught in a civil war 6 weeks later. French soldiers came and evacuated our boys from their boarding school 6 miles away and then we evacuated the next day. We moved our boys to a school in Senegal in the late fall of '02. Laura and I reentered RCI in January of '03 but were forced to evacuate once again, this time to Mali, just a week later. After 6 weeks in Mali, we relocated to Dakar, Senegal where we spent the next three years. Our oldest son graduated High School there and we then returned to the US to Gastonia, NC, my wife's hometown.
We have been Gastonia since June of '06. My wife is a FT physical therapist at the local hospital. I am currently the Directory of Technology at a nearby private school and also work as the Technical Director for their drama program. We put on five or so big pr0ductions a year. In addition, I am part-time at our local church as a worship leader for a traditional service and still play my euphonium from time to time in the orchestra.
